Text Box: **** Dawn of War
Dawn of War is, in many ways, similar to Starcraft. Instead of inventing a whole new science-fiction world, however, Dawn of War is based upon the Warhammer 40K table-top game by Games Workshop. The game is very true to the Warhammer 40K universe, and captures all the color, style, and appeal of that universe. Dawn of War has 3 expansion modules available: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm. With all these modules, you have a total of nine different and unique armies with which you can play, instead of only 3 that are provided by Starcraft. As you progress through the campaign, your army will receive bonus units, and your commander can earn bonus pieces of equipment.
One of the greatest improvements in Dawn of War over Starcraft is the fact that you do not have to spend time gathering resources before building up your army. Instead, Dawn of War emphasizes the capture of strategic points on the battlefield. The more strategic objectives you capture, the more resource points are assigned to your army that you can use to summon more units. This keeps the concentration of the game on the battle rather than on resources.
Another great difference between Dawn of War and Starcraft is the graphics. Starcraft uses 2-dimensional graphics, whereas Dawn of War uses 3-dimensional graphics. You can zoom in and out on any area of the battlefield and view objects from any angle.
The only thing that Dawn of War lacks is a mission editor to create and program your own maps and missions. Otherwise, I found the game to be much more enjoyable than Starcraft. This one is a true winner!
